Western Electric NYC Light Up Payphone

Not quite a payphone, not quite an enclosure. This light up payphone came from Midtown Manhattan. It is a panel that was part of a booth that had a stripped down 3 slot payphone behind it. What you see is actually a complete telephone. It has the network, dial, ringer, handset and switch hook assembly. Connect it to a landline and it works. The payphone behind it would have had no switch hook, dial, handset nor a subset.

The coin slots, the instruction card and the dial are illuminated from behind. The small rectangular cut out below the coin slots would have had a coin release bar that I'm guessing would have been translucent and also lit. When the coin release bar was pressed the plate behind it would have pushed the coin release button on the payphone in to release coins. There is a lock on the left side, it's a WE 10H. I don't know how many of these were made and doubt if any complete units or even partial ones like this have survived. Back in the 60s these could have been used in an airport or possibly the World's Fair. My friend Perry remembers using one in the Empire State Building when he was little.
